Thursday – Day 3 of Construction:

Hola amigos y familia!

Thursday Photo 3 We have been well fed by the ladies in the kitchen! They are up before the sun preparing hearty breakfasts for us all. Sue (Ketchikan, AK) makes great oatmeal, I think even Lee O. would approve!! Eileen (Boone, IA), Betty (LaGrangeville, NY) and Sue are a great team in the kitchen.

Thursday Photo 2 The guys worked hard all day getting the last wall and most of the ceiling joists and rafters up. Cora (McAllen, TX) and I started scraping the peeling paint off the front and side of the school. We are hoping to have enough time while we are here to paint the front of the school, too.

Tuesday – Day 1 of Construction:

Temuco Day 1 - Photo 1 We started with a poured concrete foundation…by the end of the day we had three walls up!! We had built a shade provider…which came in very useful as the unrelenting sun beat down on us all.

Temuco Day 1 - Photo 2 The construction team bonded when they had to lift the entire wall to thread it on the rebar poking up from the concrete…it was quite interesting watching 6 men pick up a wall and hold it!! Thank you for your continued prayers for our safety and health!

Temuco Construction Team 2009 – Update #1

January 20, 2009

Dear VFC partners:

We pray that this is our first update of many, however upon arriving at the “Guido Bucher School”, we found out that we have “no” phone service, (neither cell or land-line) and “no” internet connection. In some ways, we find this very exciting, however it does make it difficult to communicate to the outside world. The good news is that we arrived safely in Temuco Monday afternoon. Monday (our first day) was very busy getting everything set up for the next two weeks. Getting beds ready, tool boxes open, kitchen set up, buying groceries, and cooking our first meal kept all of us very busy. By 10:00 we were ready for bed. No one had a problem sleeping. The days are very hot but the nights cool down. Lots of water and sun-block are the priorities of the day. We expected an “avis” 12 person van however, God provided a very old 18 passenger bus with a driver!!!. God is so…..good! That’s all for now. Keep us in prayer as we are praying for all of you.

VFC Looking Towards the New Year

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

House of HopeWell friends, another year has past and as we begin 2009, we would like to share the upcoming VFC trip for this big year. In October we will be undertaking one of our biggest projects yet. Vision for Chile we will be building the House of Hope. The House of Hope is a halfway house project for the young women who must leave the orphanage when they reach 18 years of age. Even growing up in the nurturing atmosphere of the VFC orphanage, the girls become very anxious about reaching adulthood, knowing that their security is at risk when they return to the streets. Because the orphanage cannot keep them when they reach age 18, a safe home is needed for them as they adjust to the pressures of adulthood. The House of Hope will be this safe place. This is a very important project and largest to date. We are going to need three large teams of 40 people or more.

Team 1 – Saturday October 3rd through Sunday, October 18th
Team 2 – Saturday October 17th through Sunday, November 1st
Team 3 – Saturday October 31st through Sunday, November 15th
