Update #2 from Temuco

5/25/09

Family and friends,

Greetings from Chile! It has been about a week since I last reported and it hardly feels like we’ve even been here for a few days. The week passes quickly with our Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays filled with our six hour teaching schedules while Tuesdays and Thursdays are utilized for shopping, lesson planning, touring Temuco, and doing a few various chores. Saturday we generally relax or visit the different places in Temuco. On Sundays we try to visit a different church each week and spend the rest of the afternoon in fellowship and relaxation with other Chilean brothers and sisters.

After a somewhat stressful first day of teaching, we were able to gauge the students’ various levels of skill in conversing in English. We then divided them into three levels; beginning, intermediate, and advanced. The students all come from a wide variety of backgrounds. I have met an electrician who was let go from his job and wishes to improve his resume by learning English, a taxi driver studying to be a missionary who wishes to witness to English speaking foreigners like myself, and a pastor/psychiatrist who wants to learn English so he can go to America as a missionary. Whatever their background, all are eager to learn and most wish to use their skills to serve the Lord. After every conversation I am encouraged by their desire to learn in spite of financial difficulties or overwhelmingly busy schedules. (more…)

Update from the Temuco Internship Team

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Family and friends,

Greetings from Chile! My name is Ben Horne and I will be writing the updates about our trip here in the C&MA seminary in Temuco, Chile. While here, we will be facilitating conversational English classes for students, pastors, and missionaries who wish to improve their skills in English. Our team consists of Andreas Mantzke, our leader, a photographer/missionary who lives in the San Juan Islands in Washington State. Heather Myers attends Plattsburgh State University where she is studying Spanish and Communication Disorders and Sciences. She hails from Mooers, New York while I attend Crown College in Saint Bonifacius, Minnesota, where I am studying History and Bible. I currently reside in Eustis, Florida. Tom Orme, the director for Vision for Chile, will be staying with us until Wednesday the 20th when he will leave for work in Santiago, Chile.

Our team arrived Saturday the 16th at 8:30 pm. Sunday we attended Second Alliance Church which is right up the road from the seminary. We do our grocery shopping at the mall in Temuco, which is a short walk away. The city is surrounded by green hills with active volcanoes about an hour away in several directions. Our first day of teaching will be tomorrow, Wednesday. Please pray that we would be efficient with the time and resources God has blessed us with and that we would be able to be His witness as we help this ministry. Thank you all for your love, prayers, and support.

God Bless,
Ben

He answers prayer.

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

When we pray, God answers. It is especially exciting when those prayers have been lifted by many over time, and He answers so dramatically!

Several very exciting things are now happening at the Hogar, and we are praising the Lord for what He is doing there.

There are now two monthly Bible studies for the girls and for the Tia’s. The studies are about 45 minutes long and are currently being attended by almost every one of the girls and Tia’s at the Hogar. The new acting director of the Hogar, Daniel, is teaching the Bible studies. In addition to this, two of the local C&MA churches in Santiago are now coming to the Hogar on Sundays to provide transportation to and from church for any of the girls who would like to attend Sunday service. They also take the girls out for lunch and fellowship after church. As if these things weren’t exciting enough, the Hogar is currently working with the Juenta (the national C&MA church leadership group in Chile) to hire a C&MA pastor to stay at the Hogar and conduct daily devotions and Bible studies with the girls and the Tia’s.

We’ve often said that the work we do at the Hogar isn’t just about buildings or other construction projects. Meeting the physical needs of the girls will always come second to finding ways to meet their spiritual needs. Please continue to pray for the girls and the Tia’s as they attend these Bible studies and churches. Please also pray for Daniel as he leads and as he seeks God’s will for directing the Hogar. We are excited and looking forward to see how God will continue to work!
