MATCHING GIFT – Would you consider a gift as well?

Dear VFC Family,

I pray that you are enjoying the holidays. Please keep in mind that the reason for the season is to celebrate the birth our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

We have just been given an opportunity that I feel compelled to share with you. An anonymous giver has just contacted me and offered to donate $7,500.00 to Vision for Chile on the condition that we obtain matching donations. This is great news ! Unfortunately we only have until December 31st, 2011 to match the $7,500.00 donation. Can you help us out ? I know that it is Christmas time and money is tight. It is tight in the Orme home. But we need your help ! You can donate via PayPal by clicking here.

If every family could donate $75.00 or more we could have over $15,000. by January 1st, 2012.

I know that we have come to you several times this past year and you have responded. Praise God ! Please pray about this and do what God is calling you to do. Thank you so much for supporting Vision for Chile / House of Hope. Remember your gifts are helping to charge the lives of our girls. The girls of both the Hogar and House of Hope say thank you !

Vision for Chile – Special Team Update

Huge Concrete Cross Structure In Coquimbo, Chile

Huge Concrete Cross Structure In Coquimbo, Chile

We enjoyed our time of rest and relaxation in La Serena. Our hotel was very close to the beach. The water was a beautiful blue color. Saturday was spent walking around the old part of La Serena. We did some shopping and took pictures of some of the old churches that date back to the 1500’s and 1600’s. In the late afternoon, our bus driver took Bob H., Debby, Diane, Eleanor, Kerry, Jessica and Daniel on a tour of Coquimbo, a town located near La Serena. Coquimbo also has a huge concrete cross structure that you can go up in. It provides a beautiful view of the area. For dinner we went to an Italian restaurant just down the street from our hotel. We enjoyed the evening of food and fellowship.

House Of Hope Girls

House Of Hope Girls

Sunday morning we headed back to Santiago. We stopped by Los Dominicos for some additional shopping and lunch. Our next stop was the Hogar and House of Hope to finish packing and to say goodbye to the girls. It was tough saying goodbye to everyone. The girls have found a special place in all of our hearts.

Thank you for your prayers while we were in Chile building the wall and spending time with the girls at the Hogar and House of Hope. We look forward to returning to Chile as the Lord leads.

October 2011 Trip Update 5

Tuesday morning was very quiet at the breakfast table for the girls at the House of Hope. Some of them were uncomfortable in attempting to speak conversational English. We tried engaging them in conversation that required responses of simple English phrases. Kathy Cerda lead the devotion in English on Joshua 1:9. She did a wonderful job! As we were leaving for the worksite, the girls could be heard speaking in Spanish.

Building the Wall

Building the Wall

Barrett and Aaron returned to the Hogar to help with the wall. It was great having the extra helpers. Bob and John S. continued mixing cement. Kerry, Dick, Bob M, Marco, Willy, Tio Juan and Tio Jose along with Barrett and Aaron continued building the wall. They worked hard lifting the cinder blocks up to place through the re-bar. Claudia and Diane continued shifting sand. Eleanor and Debby continued touching up the walls and trim at House #4.

After dinner we relaxed at the House of Hope with the girls, Patti, Willy, Daniel and Jessica. Since we had worked really hard today at the work site, Kerry went and bought ice cream for us. Some of us were tired from the long day and went to bed early.

Wednesday morning it was the teams turn to speak Spanish only. The House of Hope girls were very helpful when we were struggling with the Spanish word we wanted to use. Others on the team ate a very quiet breakfast. John W. lead the devotional with Marco translating it into Spanish. Once on the worksite, we were not speaking Spanish. At lunch time the girls did not remind us that it was Spanish only, so we spoke in English. Overall this was a good experience as it showed us how challenging it is for the girls to communicate with us with their limited English.

Ladies Shoveling Mortar

Ladies Shoveling Mortar

A load of concrete arrived at the worksite Wednesday morning. Tio Juan and Jose unloaded it all by themselves (Kerry and John S. showed up to help with the last 8 cinder blocks). There were about 650 cinder blocks on the truck. Right before lunch, another load of 650 cinder blocks arrived. The ladies on the team had just rounded the corner from the guys dormitory and saw the truck pulling in. We realized the team would not be on time for lunch. Our team work paid off and the truck was unloaded. Jose, Willy, Bob H. were on the truck bed handing down the cinder blocks. The rest of us were taking the cinder blocks and putting them in to piles. Debby and Eleanor volunteered to continue putting mortar on the wall, so that the concrete would not dry up in the wheelbarrow. Words cannot express how much this helped the guys out. After the cinder blocks had been unloaded we finished using up the mortar that was left in the two wheel barrows, as we could not leave any cement in them while we were at lunch. Needless to say, we all worked up a good appetite for lunch!

Wednesday evening was the Fiesta! Both the girls at the Hogar and the team look forward to this every year.We ate dinner with the girls in the dining hall at the Hogar. After dinner, the girls in each house will performed traditional Chileno dances. A few of the homes broke tradition and danced to some of today’s contemporary music. The team participated by doing some break dancing (Willy and Jacob). Justin Bieber (Bob H.) returned to do an encore performance of “Baby, Baby”. Little did he know that Debby, Diane, Eleanor and Claudia had a bone to pick with him due to the task they had of scraping his many pictures off of the walls in House #4. We interrupted his concert and pulled out our scrapers. As the song continued and we approached him with our scrapers, the unexpected happened. Most of the girls got out of their chairs and begin protecting Justin. It was hilarious seeing them push Debby, Diane and Claudia away from Justin. We ended the night leading the girls in singing “Open the Eyes of My Heart Lord” in Spanish and English. Barrett stayed for this event and really enjoyed the opportunity of seeing this highlight of our time in Chile. This year the Hogar gave presents to the team members. It was a coffee mug with the C&MA logo and name of the Hogar on it. Kerry was very excited when he opened his present! Tom was presented with letters of gratitude from the Hogar staff and little hearts from a few of the girls w/ words of appreciation.

Thursday was our last day at the work site. We accomplished 100% of Kerry’s goal for building the wall. The team completed 50 % of the wall. Tio Juan, Jose and Willy will finish up the wall over the next few weeks. Debby and Eleanor finished up painting House #4. What a difference a coat of paint makes! Marco received good news today while he was at the work site. The strike has ended at the university he attends. He left early so that he could go register for classes that will start on November 2nd. Tonight we relaxed after dinner.

Friday morning we will leave for Las Serena where the team will spend a few days of rest and relaxation. We will head back to Santiago on Sunday morning, so we have a few hours to pick up our luggage and head to the airport.

Thank you for all your prayers over the past week and a half. We have had beautiful weather – not too cold/not too hot. God brought many people into our lives at just the right time to help accomplish His work at the Hogar.

In Christ,
Diane

October 2011 Trip Update 4

We thank the Lord for his protection over the structure of House #5 on Saturday night.  While we were all up at the House of Hope, the dog house behind House #5 caught on fire.  The flames reached high enough to scorch the concrete wall of the house and the metal stairway landing that leads to the second floor.   The fire was put out and everyone is safe.  It is unknown at this time what caused the fire.

Sifting the sand for the mortar

Sifting the sand for the mortar

Sunday morning after breakfast at the House of Hope we headed next door to the C&MA church for Sunday School and Church.  Our team lead the congregation in singing I’m in the Lord’s Army – in English.  For Sunday School, most of us joined the girls from the House of Hope in their Young Adult Sunday School class.  Lissette translated the lesson into English for us.  She did an excellent job!  The lesson was on I Chronicles 28 and we learned about David and the temple and being a man after God’s own heart.  We attended the beginning portion of the service and sang a few choruses in Spanish.  Around 12:00, we left to get ready for our afternoon in San Antonio, a port city located south of Santiago.  Daniel, Jessica and Anais joined us for the day.  Most of us took a boat tour around the port.  San Antonio’s port is the largest port in Chile and has 9 docks/piers.  We saw many pelicans and seals.  We walked along the boardwalk and did some shopping.  For dinner, we ate at a restaurant that served a variety of meats.  Some ate fresh salmon and Chilean sea bass.  We had a relaxing day in the sun and were refreshed for a new week of work on the wall and painting.

Monday morning, Bob H. led us in a devotion on Micah 6:8.  He expanded upon being kind to one another and walking humbly with our God.

Building the Wall

Building the Wall

At the work site today, the men continued putting cinder blocks on the wall.  Bob H. and John S. continued making cement.  Bob M., Dick, Marco and Kerry continued placing the cinder blocks in the wall.  A new task was given to Claudia, Diane and Eleanor.  We needed to shift the sand as there were too many small rocks in the pile of sand that had been brought in last week.  The small rocks were causing issues with the mortar used in between each cinder block.  About 30 minutes into this project, Eleanor was offered a job promotion in helping  Debby continue painting House #4.  She quickly jumped at this opportunity as the benefits were better than staying in her current role.  One of the ladies and two youth leaders from the San Marcos church came to help today.  Karen helped Debby and Eleanor paint in House #4.  Barrett and Aaron help load cinder blocks in a wheelbarrow so they would be closer to the wall.  They also helped put the cinder blocks on the wall.  What a blessing these three were to us today!  We received a delivery of small sized rocks that are used with building the wall.  We are currently waiting on an additional delivery of 1,100 more cinder blocks.  They were supposed to be delivered on Monday, but were not.  Please pray that they will be delivered on Tuesday so progress can continue on the wall.

Team visiting a casa

Tonight we ate dinner at three of the homes at the Hogar.  These were the homes with the oldest girls at the Hogar.  Tom, Bob M. and John S. shared with the girls.  The translators were the girls from the House of Hope – Estephania, Lissette and Kati.  They did a great job!  We shared with the girls about our love for them and prayer that they would have a desire to live at the House of Hope once they turn 18.

Tom has given a challenge to the girls at the House of Hope and to the team.  Tuesday and Thursday this week will be “English only” days, and Wednesday will be a “Spanish only day”.  Tom has asked Kathy Cerda and Daniella from the House of Hope to lead the devotions on the English only days.  At the work site today, some of the team members were practicing the few words we know in Spanish.  All the choruses on Wednesday will be sung in Spanish.  Please keep all of us in prayer on these days as each of us will be stretched in this growing experience.

We continue seeing answers to prayers in regards to God providing us just the right amount of additional workers each day to work on the wall and paint House #4.   Continue to pray for safety and health – some of us have been having issues over the past few days with the pollen.

In Christ,
Diane

October 2011 Trip Update #3

Wall - Before

Wall - Before

On Thursday, three Korean ladies arrived at the Hogar to help with building the wall.  When they came to tour the Hogar on Wednesday, they saw Eleanor hard at work and said if she can do that type of work, so can they.  They helped shovel small rocks into the wheelbarrow and put small rocks into plastic containers used to fill the holes in the cinder blocks.  One of the ladies worked with Debby and Eleanor in House #4 cleaning the walls and kitchen appliances.  The ladies even brought Korean food to share with us.  We enjoyed our time with them.  The men continued working on the wall.

Thursday evening, we took three cars into downtown Santiago for dinner.  We ate at a restaurant called Santiago Colonial.  We enjoyed a variety of meals – some with mashed peas and others had a Chilean dish called pastel de choclo.  For dessert, we had a sampler of desserts served in Northern and Southern Chile.  They were very tasty.

Work continued on Friday on the wall. We are making progress on the section where we had to dig the 3 foot ditch.  We are at the stage where cement needs to be put in the ditch so after it dries, the cinder blocks can be placed at ground level.  Debby, Eleanor and Diane continued spackling sections of the wall at House #4 in preparation for the painting job on Saturday.

Girl with one of the Quilts given to all the Hogar Girls

Friday evening we had our traditional “Talent” show.  This year we were honored with a surprise visit from Justin Bieber (aka Bob H.).  The girls were so excited that Justin came to see them.  Eleanor shared a little bit about her life with the girls, John W. sang a solo and the girls at the House of Hope performed a skit with a spiritual lesson.  Some of the girls and team members participated in playing Telephone.  It was interesting to see how much the original sentence had changed by the time it got to the end.  We finished up the evening with ice cream sundaes.  Before the girls returned to their homes, Kerry and John had a special treat for the girls.  Women from their church had obtained quilts from an organization called “Wrapped In Love”.  Kerry brought them down to the Hogar and each girl was able to choose their own quilt.  On Saturday, many of the girls could be seen outside with their quilts.  They really enjoyed receiving this gift.

Painting

Painting

Saturday we were joined by many people from the San Marcos area.  Fourteen adults and 16 teen/children.  In the late morning two teens from the Korean church came to help.  Debby was in charge of overseeing the painting of the ceiling, walls and trim in House #4.  Most of the ladies and children helped with this project.  Kerry put the men and teenagers to work on building the wall:  making cement, putting cinder blocks down, filling the spaces in the cinder block with small rocks and then using cement to top off where the small rocks had been places.  Others pushed wheelbarrows of cement over to the ditch to fill it in and helped put larger rocks into the ditch in between loads of cement.  Needless to say with all the helping hands today, we made great progress at House #4 and with the wall.  The group stopped at 2 PM for lunch.  We had hot dogs, chips and soda.  The San Marcos church brought popsicles for dessert.  They were a big hit with the girls at the Hogar.

After dinner on Saturday, the group walked next door to the San Isabel grocery store to purchase ice cream cones.  Tom’s treat!

On Sunday, we will attend the local C&MA church next door to the House of Hope.  In the early afternoon, we will travel by van to San Antonio, and do a little sightseeing and shopping.  We will eat dinner in San Antonio before heading back to La Pintana.

We thank the Lord for sending us all the workers on Saturday.  It was a true blessing.  A big Thank You to those who have contributed towards the supplies for the wall.  You are helping make this all possible.  Please continue to pray for us as we work towards our goal of completing the task of building the wall.

October 2011 Trip Update #2

Eleanor has been helping Patti in the kitchen for breakfast.  They have been doing a great job making a hearty meal for the team and the girls at the House of Hope.  Speaking of Patti, she was washing some straggler dishes on Tuesday night and a glass broke while she was washing it.  She ended up cutting the bottom portion of her pinky.  Kathy Cerda, who is studying nursing, was able to help.  We determined that it looked like she would need stitches.  When Willie and Patti arrived at the clinic, it was packed with people, but Praise God that they did not have to wait very long.  Patti ended up needing 4 stitches.

Kerry, our el jeffe, worked us very hard on Tuesday.  Kerry rented a mini bulldozer/backhoe to help with the removal of the trees where the new wall will be going.  The rental company supplied a driver for the backhoe.  He helped dig out the dirt and roots around the trees.  Because there were roots of the tree on the adjacent property, we had to use manual labor to pull the trees down.  Juan, Jose helped chop away at the roots and several of the team (Kerry, Willie, Diane, Debby, Marco) helped pull on the rope to cause the trees to fall.  The next step in the process was using the Sawzall and ax to chop the limbs off the trees and chop the trunks into smaller pieces.  A big thanks to the NW Lumber company for providing the Sawzall blades.  Later in the morning  2 trucks arrived with 1,100 cinder blocks – each block weighing 40 pounds.  John S., Juan and Jose quickly hopped on the bed of the truck and began handing the blocks to the rest of the team.  It went by quickly with so many helping hands.  Strength training at its best!

2 trucks arrived with 1,100 cinder blocks

We had a relaxing evening at the House of Hope eating dinner and enjoying fellowship with the girls.  For the evening entertainment, the girls and Jacob danced using the Dance Wii DVD.  The girls twisted a few arms of the team and had us out on the dance floor for a few of the songs – those team members will remain anonymous (Diane, Tom, Bob M., John S. and Eleanor).  We had a blast dancing to The Monster Mash and Viva Las Vegas.  I think we worked off the delicious custard that Patti had made for dessert!

Wednesday morning, Debby led a devotion on God growing us through trials and how God doesn’t give all of us the exact same trial to go through.  We then listened to a Christian contemporary song “Blessings”, which fit right in with the devotional.  After the devotion we spent time in prayer praying for continued safety and protection for the team as we continue our work on the wall and other requests that were mentioned.

Once at the worksite, Debby, Eleanor and Diane continued their work in House #4 scrapping many pictures of Justin Bieber off one of the bedroom walls.   We have found that the girls liked to use finger nail polish to attach pictures to the wall – using whatever color was available.  The men were ready to being work on building the wall.  John S. and Marco began to mix the cement.  We are working on an existing portion of the wall where we did not have to dig a ditch.  Juan and Willie were in charge of putting the cement on the wall and making sure each cinder block is level.  Bob H. and Dick brought small rocks over that go inside the two holes of the cinder block.  We had two interns come and help today.  They were a great addition to the team helping move cinderblocks closer to the location of where we were building the wall today.

Today was a big day in that Kelley brought two people from different non-profit organizations who have an interest in helping contribute to the upkeep of the girls homes.  Tom also had people from a newspaper, “I Love Chile” come for a tour of the Hogar and House of Hope.  They are planning on writing a 2 page article for the paper which will be read by Chileans inside and out of Chile.

Tonight Debby, Eleanor and Diane will be sharing in 3 of the girls homes at the Hogar.  Thursday after we finish up at the worksite and get cleaned up, we will be going into Santiago for dinner.  This will be the first time the team has had an opportunity to be outside the Hogar and House of Hope.

We are excited to see the variety of ways God is bringing organizations and people into the path of the Hogar.  Please pray that the non-profit organizations will get the appropriate approval to donate to the needs of the Hogar and that the newspaper article will touch the hearts of Chileans in other countries who will feel lead to get involved in the Hogar or House of Hope.
