Why do you go to Chile every year?

The question comes up periodically – Why do you go to Chile every year?

Debby went on her first short-term missions trip to Ecuador while Bob was still working.  Two things kept Bob from going with her – his job and the fact it was a trip for women only!  Bob retired from his job in 2000 and, using his new-found free time, got involved with Poplar Point Alliance Camp, a small Christian camp in Alabama.  This ministry fit well into their belief that the youth are the future of the church.  Since 2000, we have spent many wonderful hours working at this camp!

In 2004, our church wanted to get more “involved” in short-term missions.  Tom Orme came and shared about Vision for Chile, an organization that ministered to girls at the Hogar la Granja in La Pintana, Santiago, Chile.  This ministry fit in very well with our desire to work with youth and so we joined with three others from our church and traveled to Chile for two weeks.  Working with Vision for Chile can truly soften a heart of stone!  I like to tell people that my heart is in Chile with these young girls that have been through so much in a short period of time.  That first year we built a duplex home for 20 girls.  Most of all, we were able to interact with the girls and share the love of Christ with them.

Since that first trip to Chile, we have returned every year, sometimes for two weeks and sometimes for four.  We have been blessed to work with two different Hogars, a school and churches.  We have pounded nails, run conduit, wired buildings, worked on plumbing, hung drywall, mixed concrete, laid block, helped with Vacation Bible School, cooked, shopped and a myriad of other tasks!  The best task of all is working with the youth of Chile. We have worked with children who literally live on the streets and those at the hogars whose families live in all sections of Santiago, including the finest.  What is the common need for each and every one of them?  A personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ!  Many of those we work with have experienced things we cannot even begin to imagine and need the healing power only Christ can provide.  We get to see many of the same girls each year.

One other reason for returning each year is working with great people.  It is surprising how quickly you grow close to the team!  At the end of two-weeks, you feel as if they are family!  When you return to Chile, it is as if you never left!  We also have the opportunity to work with great Chilean families!  Daniel and Jessica Trujillo truly have a heart for sharing Christ!  We have worked with them first at the Hogar la Granja and then at the House of Hope.  They are gifted of God!

We would encourage each of you to get more involved with missions.  There is a mission’s trip out there that will fit you to a “T”!  We would love to have you and your church come to Chile with us!  Oh, yes, why do we go to Chile every year?  God has called us to this ministry!

February 2011 Trip – Update #1-3

Below are 3 updates from the February 2011 Trip. Make sure you click on “Read the Rest of this Entry” to catch up on all that’s been going on!

Monday, February 21, 2011
Greetings from the Vision for Chile team in Santiago, Chile! I am Kathy H. and I will be sending updates of our activities every couple of days.

On Friday the early arrivers settled in–the men in the Hogar, and the women in the House of Hope. Patty and Willy, the caretakers whose home we came to work on made us feel very welcome. Some of us went to the mall to exchange money, and then to the grocery store for essentials–four kinds of ice cream. On Saturday, the men went to Sodimac (the Chilean version of Home Depot) to buy supplies. Cindy was fortunate to tour downtown Santiago with Kathy M. and Lissette, two of the lovely girls from the House of Hope. Kathy H. spent most of the day in bed recuperating from a GI bug. Pastor John caught it, too. They are both much better, but please pray for continued good health for the whole team.

On Sunday we attended an enthusiastic and spirit-filled service at the church next door. We even recognized some of the songs, like “Open the Eyes of My Heart, Lord” and “I’m in the Lord’s Army.” We actually had to dance to that one! That afternoon we visited with the girls at the Hogar (which means ‘home’), which is just down the street from the House of Hope.

On Monday, after our devotion, singing and prayer, construction boss Kerry put us to work on drywall–moving it, mudding it, and sanding it. We are still awaiting the arrival of Gary and Shane, who were delayed in Atlanta. They are now on a plane bound for Chile, and should arrive Tuesday morning. Please pray for their safe arrival. Thanks for all your support and prayers. We are blessed to be here!

October 2010 Trip – Team 2 – Update #2

Caretakers House Under Construction

On Tuesday, the team finished up the framing and attaching the OSB sheathing to the porch. In the evening, Willie, Patti, their son Jacob and the girls from the House of Hope (Estefania, Lissette, Kathy, Katty and Daneilla), joined us for dinner. After dinner we had the opportunity to ask the girls, Willie, Patti and Jacob questions. We learned what the girls were studying at the university, what they enjoy doing in their free time, how they enjoy having a little “brother” around and how Jacob enjoys having a lot of big “sisters”, and how much it means for them to be at the House of Hope. Willie and Patti answered questions about working at the House of Hope as the caretaker, cook, etc., and it turns out that to them it is not a job, it is a ministry to God. They love what they do and they love the girls.

Here is an update on those who have been feeling under the weather: Lee rejoined the workforce on Wednesday. Ryan needed an additional day to rest and rejoined the workforce on Thursday. Corey and John are not feeling well today. Pray that they will feel better soon.

Kerry worked the team hard on Wednesday. His goal was to get the roof completed (minus the shingles). Andreas, Caleb, Catherine, Corey, Dick, Kerry and Lee worked on the roof framing and attaching the OSB sheathing. Dennis was in charge of cutting the 2×6’s and OSB sheathing. Claire, Lissette and Andrew installed the facias for the roof. Debby and Diane were able to join in and help with miscellaneous tasks in the afternoon. The roof work was finished around 6:30 PM and because dinner was at 7 PM and we were to be guests at the House of Hope for dinner, we did not have time to walk back to the Hogar to shower. But they let us eat with them anyway! J Patti and the girls served us delicious lasagna, salad, homemade bread and peaches and cream. Since we had the opportunity to ask the girls questions on Tuesday night, it was now their turn to ask us questions. It was fun to find out why each of us choose to come to Chile and we enjoyed hearing about embarrassing moments some of us had experienced while on a Vision for Chile missions trip.

Today, we woke up to a light fog. By mid-morning the fog had disappeared. Our devotional this morning was about delighting ourselves in the Lord and the importance of doing our work for the Lord and not man. When we got to the job site, the team members began working on putting building wrap on the porch and finishing up some the interior framing. Tonight the team will be having dinner at a restaurant in downtown Santiago. We are continuing to enjoy warm springtime weather.

In His Love,

Diane

October 2010 Trip Team Update #3

Thursday, October 7, 2010

(This update 3 of 4 from the previous team who was in Chile Oct. 2–17, 2010)

Hola!

What a weekend!! We kicked it off Friday night with a Variety show and ice cream party for the Hogar weekend girls. Some of the girls of the Hogar can actually go to their homes over the weekend for visits. The rest, who don’t have homes or those homes are too dangerous for them, remain at the Hogar over the weekend. About 35 girls remain per weekend. We invited them to the dining hall for some singing, dancing and laughter topped off with an ice cream sundae. They had a blast!

So did we! What a talented group we have! Some highlights were Corey, Caleb, Jared, Tom M, Ryan and Katherine offering a forwards AND reverse rendition of “I’m a Little Teapot” and Jane and Amiee’s leading of the Chicken Dance and Hokie Pokie. Tommy (Tom O.) & Mabel (Cora) made an appearance that, literally, words can’t describe!

Saturday was a great work day, accomplishing more than we anticipated. We had HOH family members & La Pintana C&MA church members visiting to help. We ended the day with a big cookout where Daniel, with Joel’s assistance, grilled hamburgers and hotdogs. Patty and Willie explored the first and second floors of their new home. It’s so exciting to see God provide for this faithful couple. It’s certainly been a challenge to me!

Sunday we had a great time at church at the La Pintana C&MA church. Bill gave greetings for us all, Jane gave her testimony and Jessica and I sang “You are God Alone”. It was evident that we worship the same God and he was rightly lifted up as we all sang of our redeemer! Tom O & Daniel visited the Santiago Community Church. Tom spoke. This church wants to get involved in supporting the HOH.

We, then, got on the bus and headed to for some shopping at Pomaire. We enjoyed a wonderful Chilean meal and headed back to the Hogar. God was on the bus, as well, and choose that ride to be the moment of salvation for our bus driver, Eugene! Cora was speaking and sharing with him the whole trip and, as a few prayed behind them, she lead him in the prayer of faith! Upon our return Lee M gave him a Spanish Bible to start on his new journey with the Lord. Pray for Eugene! Pray that God will lead him to a church for discipleship and growth in Him!

Back to work today. I look out of the House of Hope where I’m writing, it’s almost raining, but they are working hard. Immediately I see Jerry leading the Woodchuck’s cutting lumber and Larry hanging off a ladder nailing OSB board. Everyone is busy working either on the house or helping to get lunch ready. Except Jim and Ken…Bill asked them to clean the men’s dorm this morning. =)

We’re struggling a little with physical challenges. Sarah was out with a migraine most of Friday, but God has restored her. Lee O is back almost to full health and is back to work. It is cold and wet out today and we have many with coughs and stuffed noses. Pray for strength for everyone!

Thank you for your prayer and support! We feel it!

Because of the cross,

Lisa for the team
