February 2012 Team Update – #1

Time flies in Chile, especially for a small team!  Today is the fifth and final day of Vacation Bible School.  We began the week with a group of about 20 children, most from a Hogar further up Miguel Angel.  Yesterday we had about 45 children present!  Today, perhaps God will fill the La Pintana Church!  We have enjoyed the time spent with these children.  The first day there were two who prayed to accept Christ!  Wednesday saw five more pray!!!  Our intern Marie and Lissette authored the program.  The other girls have all pitched in and have helped “fine-tune” it.  Our team is pitching in as needed for the skits (loved the donkey ears, Lee).  The girls have been providing the music (Daniel on drums) with Willy leading the singing.  I must say that Willy is perfect for the job!  Patty is providing the snack each day – you should see the kids line up!

Unfortunately, the girls from our hogar (Hogar la Granja) had other things planned and have been unable to participate in the VBS or to have dinner with us.  God did provide a new contact here in Chile.  Valle (turns out to be a friend of Kathrin Reinhart Brinkman) and her family minister to 45 boys and girls each weekend.  These children come from an area only a few blocks from the House of Hope but where many have no electricity, water, sewers or even proper shelter.

The work on the apartments continues.  Lord willing, we will be able to paint the second floor apartment Saturday.  Kitchen cabinets, closets and desks next week!  Our prayer is they will be completely finished when we leave!  Today should be the final sanding. Praise the Lord!

We are staying at the House of Hope.  Patty and the girls are treating us very well.  We did meet with the architect concerning the October building project.  Valle and her family rent their house from the person who owns the property right behind the House of Hope.  This is an old plant nursery that has been empty for years.  When the former owner died, she instructed her heir that she wanted the property to be used for Christ.  Valle’s mother is going to contact him about Vision for Chile!

Prayer requests:

  • Health (the standard breathing difficulty)
  • Relationship with the Hogar
  • October’s building project (planning, permits, etc)
  • God’s will/provision for additional land
  • The ever elusive checking account
  • That you will be able to come to Chile in October!

October 2011 Trip Update #1—from Diane

The team arrived safely on Sunday. We are a small team this year – just 10 of us. Bob M. and Eleanor are first timers and it did not take long for them to fit in and feel right at home. After lunch and a nap on Sunday the team felt refreshed. We ate dinner at the House of Hope and met 2 of the new girls (Claudia and Domi) who live at the home. We spent time introducing ourselves and sharing something about our lives. Most of the girls are studying nursing or social work at the local universities. By the end of the evening we were all ready for a good night’s rest.

There are only 3 women on the team this year. Since the ladies are small in numbers, we are staying in the House of Hope. We are excited about getting to spend extra time in the evenings with the girls. The men are staying in the dormitory at the Hogar. John S. has already spent time playing foosball and soccer with a few of the girls. Jessica, the wife of Daniel, will be leading us in music each morning. Patti, the caretakers wife, will do the cooking for us this year so most of our meals will be at The House of Hope. For lunch today, she made her popular bread pudding. I’m looking forward to when she makes her guacamole.

Today the team had a busy morning down at the Hogar. We are digging a ditch where the new wall will be built. Because of earthquakes in Chile, the ditch has to be three feet deep. Tio Juan and Jose, who handle the maintenance at the Hogar, are helping us. They sure are hard workers! Willie, the caretaker at the House of Hope and Marco, who attends one of the local C&MA churches, will be helping us over the next two weeks. Bob H., Debby and Bob M. have been tasked with addressing an issue in the bathroom of Casa #4. They spent the morning chipping away at the floor tiles and concrete. The temperature this morning was cool. It has been a blessing since we most of us have been working outside.

Tonight we divided up into three groups and ate dinner at three of the homes at the Hogar. John W., Kerry and Bob H. shared with the girls. We enjoyed our time with the girls. On Wednesday evening we will eat at the other 3 homes at the Hogar.

Please keep the education system in Chile in your prayers. The students at certain public universities are on strike and there have not been classes for the past several months. Marco attends one of those universities. Pray that the government and students can come to a resolution so classes can resume.

We look forward to seeing God at work at the Hogar and House of Hope.

In Christ,
Diane

We now have $6250 in cash and commitments towards the $25,000 Matching Grant. We thank those of you that have sacrificed greatly to help meet the needs of the girls at the House of Hope.  The deadline for this matching grant is a mere few days away – Friday, June 10th.  Every dollar given is worth two for this ministry.  Every dollar given, we praise the Lord for.

As you know, we are at a critical stage for The House of Hope.  Every course of action is being considered – from releasing staff to closing the doors completely.  Please be in prayer for VFC’s Director, Tom Orme, as he travels to Santiago tomorrow to meet with Daniel, the staff, and the Vision Por Chile board.  All options will be thoroughly explored; it will be a time of pivotal decision-making, but we all pray desperately for God’s will – in this ministry, in the girls’ lives, in our lives. Please join us.
